The study of WRATH- -

All definitions are from the original language of the
New Testement, which was Greek, the language
held by the Roman Empire at the time.
They are the closest we can get to the original meaning
today, and each word definition is cross referenced to the
context of the verse.

Wrath is mentioned in the new testement 47 times. . . and,
the Wrath of God, is  9 times in the new testement.
When we know Jesus died so we could be covered by His righteousness,
through His grace. .
how come so many references to wrath. .

So much has been preached on the 'Wrath of God' putting fear in the hearts of man,
so  they scarcely could see the tenderness through grace
that Jesus feels for us, and gives us. .
through his work of the cross. . so here is a clearification of wrath. . .

So lets take it one verse at a time:

First: example- - - -
lets look at the meaning of the 'Wrath of God' as mentioned 9 times in the N.T.

JOHN 3: 36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life:
 and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life;
but the wrath of God abideth on him. . . . .

WRATH, as defined in the Greek, in these above verse:
3709 orge {or-gay'}
from 3713
(1) anger, the natural disposition, temper, character
(2) movement or agitation of the soul, impulse,
desire, any violent emotion, but esp. anger
(3) anger, wrath, indignation
(4) anger exhibited in punishment,
hence used for punishment itself
(4.a) of punishments inflicted by magistrates

What wrath is Jesus referring to here?

He is referring to the coming age of grace for all men,
(after His work on the cross, is finished)
but those who don't know about it,
because they are  self righteous and don't believe,
will eventually face the anger of God,
for not accepting His son, and His greatest free gift of all time,
to mankind. . and not only that,

but they will stay in a state of anger,
(as proved here:
Luke 4:28  And all they in the synagogue,
when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,)

because they still want to be counted as important,
to their own salvation, by their works. . (selfrighteousness)
and will not be able to see
the liberty in the grace of God, and the freedom of forgivness,
and the covering of the saved by the righteousness of Jesus.

THEY JUST WILL NOT ACCEPT THE FREE GIFT OF GOD- -
and that leaves them,
confounded by their own attempts to justify themselves. . which means that,
they consider what Jesus did for us on the cross,  of no effect. .
THEY HAVE FALLEN FROM GRACE, in that they could not have it for themselves.
thus, they cannot accept it for anyone else, and will fight against it. . (as did Paul,
at first) when he was Saul. . . "wrath will abide in them"

************************************************************************

Second example- - -

Romans 1:18  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven
against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men,
who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

'ALL'  as in all ungodliness. . .and unrighteousness. . . .
3956 pas {pas}
including all the forms of declension
(1) individually
(1.a) each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, all things, everything
(2) collectively
(2.a) some of all types ++++ ... "the whole world has gone after him
" Did all the world go after Christ?
"then went all Judea, and were baptized of him in Jordan."
Was all Judea, or all Jerusalem, baptized in Jordan?
"Ye are of God, little children", and the whole world lieth in the wicked one".
Does the whole world there mean everybody?
The words "world" and "all" are used in some seven or eight senses in Scripture,
and it is very rarely the "all" means all persons, taken individually.
The words are generally used to signify that Christ has redeemed some of all sorts --
some Jews, some Gentiles, some rich, some poor,
and has not restricted His redemption to either Jew or Gentile ...
C.H. Spurgeon from a sermon on Particular Redemption
KJV: all 748, all things 170, every 117, all men 41,
whosoever 31, everyone 28, whole 12, all manner of 11,
every man 11, no+3756 9, every thing 7, any 7, whatsoever 6,
whosoever+3739+302 3,

OK, the ALL here, as in "all ungodliness and unrighteousness", doesn't mean all and every single
ungodly act of unrighteousness. . else, who would be forgiven, by the grace of God ? !
it means all of the types. . for example:

Mark 1:5  And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem,
and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

as in the above verse. .
it doesn't mean the whole of the people  in Judaea were baptized,
it means all, as in all sorts of people in the land of Judaea. . .
were baptized. . . IE. all types of people in Judaea. . . .

and what does it mean 'who hold the truth in unrighteousness' ?
Lets look at a few meanings. . below:

To know more of what Paul is saying here, you have to read the next several verses as well. .

Romans 1:18  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against
all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men,
who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

19  ¶Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20  For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen,
being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead;
so that they are without excuse:
21  Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful;
but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23  And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man,
and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Verse 20 is a key verse here:

Those that see the creations of God, and know there is a God, yet know not there is salvation through
grace, from the cross of Jesus, , yet corrupt this truth into their own vanity, and worship the things
created, instead of the creator. . God's wrath will be revealed to these, from heaven, through
the light, shining on darkness, to all who hold against, or fight against. .the truth of the living God,
and the gift he has given to us through His son, on the cross. .

They give the opposite of  glory to God. . ie.
GLORY
1391 doxa {dox'-ah}
from the base of 1380
(1) opinion, judgment, view
(2) opinion, estimate, whether good or bad concerning someone
(2.a) in the NT always a good opinion concerning one, resulting in praise, honour, and glory

(3.c.1) a thing belonging to God
(3.c.1) the kingly majesty which belongs to him as supreme ruler, majesty in the sense of the absolute perfection of the deity
(3.c.2) a thing belonging to Christ
(3.c.2.a) the kingly majesty of the Messiah
(3.c.2.b) the absolutely perfect inward or personal excellency of Christ; the majesty
(3.c.3) of the angels
(3.c.3.a) as apparent in their exterior brightness
(4) a most glorious condition, most exalted state
(4.a) of that condition with God the Father in heaven to which Christ was raised after he had achieved his work on earth
(4.b) the glorious condition of blessedness into which is appointed and promised that true
Christians shall enter after their Saviour's return from heaven
KJV: glory 145, glorious 10, honour 6, praise 4, dignity 2, worship 1

The anger of wrath, will rest on their hearts. .
(as proved here: Luke 4:28  And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things,
were filled with wrath,)

both now and later. . if they do not come to the
knowledge of truth. . .

Ephesians 5:6  Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh
the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
Colossians 3:6  For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

DISOBEDIENCE: as in "children of disobedience"
0543 apeitheia {ap-i'-thi-ah}
from 545
(1) obstinacy, obstinate opposition to the divine will
KJV: unbelief 4, disobedient 3

Both of these verses refer to the same type. .
Listen to no vain gosple, that does not speak to the saving grace of God through Jesus. .
With the accepting of the truth, and believing in what Jesus did for us, we are in Jesus.
He has given us His righteousness, mercy, forgivness, and tender care, through His grace.
With this we are set free from the bondage of Sin, , through His nailing of His flesh, to the cross.

Even though we sin still in the flesh,  God sees us as perfect in Christ. .
We always need to know this, and stay in Christ, otherwise, we fall from His grace,
and become children of disobedience. . and sin will abound in our flesh,
and we will begin to look for justification, somewhere else, other than in Christ. .
It is possible to become so guilt ridden, and convicted in our hearts, that we
cannot help but feel the anger in our lives, having no where to turn. . for rest,
relief from sin, or salvation. .

Revelation 14:10  The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God,
 which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation;
and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels,
and in the presence of the Lamb:

This wrath of God has a different meaning then the above meanings. .

WRATH; as in :" wrath of God"
2372 thumos {thoo-mos'}
from 2380
(1) passion, angry, heat, anger forthwith boiling up and soon subsiding again
(2) glow, ardour, the wine of passion, inflaming wine
(which either drives the drinker mad or kills him with its strength)
KJV: wrath 15, fierceness 2, indignation 1

This wrath is poured out, without mixture. . that is without mercy. .
from God Himself. . to those who take on the mark of the beast.
They will drink of the 'wine of the wrath of God'

Whatever is this mark, , no believer would take this. . the holy spirit
would protect all things Jesus has taught, in the heart of the believer.

AND THE LAST verses of the "wrath of God"

Revelation 14:19  And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
Revelation 15:1  ¶And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.
Revelation 15:7 And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever.
Revelation 16:1  ¶And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

These all refer to the cleasing of the earth, from evil, the devil, and his hentchmen. . I don't think I will go
into this anymore here. .

************************************************************************************

PART 2:

The single use of the word "wrath" in the N. T.

Matthew 3:7  ¶But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism,
he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
and:
Luke 3:7  Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers,
who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

He is referring to the coming age of grace for all men, (after His work on the cross, if finished)
but those who don't know about it,
because they are to selfrighteous and don't believe,  will eventually face the anger of God,
for not accepting His son, and His greatest free gift of all time, to mankind. .
and not only that,

but they will stay in a state of anger,
(as proved here: Luke 4:28  And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things,
were filled with wrath,)
because they still want to be counted as important,
to their own salvation, by their works. . (selfrighteousness) and will not be able to see
the liberty in the grace of God, and the freedom of forgivness,
and the covering of the saved by the righteousness of Jesus.

THEY JUST WILL NOT ACCEPT THE FREE GIFT OF GOD- - and that leaves them,
confounded by their own attempts to justify themselves. . which means that,
they consider what Jesus did for us on the cross,  of no effect. .
THEY HAVE FALLEN FROM GRACE, in that they could not have it for themselves.
thus, they cannot accept it for anyone else, and will fight against it. . (as did Paul,
at first) when he was Saul. . . "wrath will abide in them"

this is a common message that Jesus taught. . and the same answer applies to many of His
references to the "wrath of God"   He was trying to show us an 'alert'  to how great a thing
was about to happen from God. . and He wanted to get out attention, and the attention of
the religeous leaders of the time. .

*********************************************************************************

Romans 2:5  But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
Romans 2:8  But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
Romans 4:15  Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
Romans 5:9  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

All these verses are similiar. .
Paul stressed this to give us divine understanding of the difference of
the Love of God,
giving us grace in full measure,
and working for our own salvation through the law of works,
that lead to the untruth of self righteousness.
They thought that man had the power to earn favor with God,
through the law of 'good works'
and that this would bestow to themselves, their own righteousness.
The religious leaders of the time of Jesus,
were very righteous in their own eyes,
not only making them nearly equal to God,
but stealing the glory of God, who is the only righteousness,
and thinking they had their own glory, through their 'goodnesses'.

Whoa, isn't that why Satan fell? ?
and didn't that bring God's wrath!

JESUS WAS TELLING US THAT GOD DID NOT WANT
US TO THINK WE WERE  RIGHTEOUS.

THAT GODLY RIGHTEOUSNESS WAS COMING
FOR ALL MANKIND, WHO BELIEVED,
AND WAS GOING TO BE POURED OUT ON US
THROUGH JESUS, AS A FREE GIFT OF SALVATION
AND ATONEMENT.

And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness,
which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ,
the righteousness which is of God by faith:
Philippians 3:9

God gave His only son, for us,
There was nothing more valuable He could give.
Jesus was telling those of the time,
this was the saving grace of God,
not the works of law,
but the fulfillment of the all the law.

That's why when asked '
John 6:28 What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
29  Jesus answered and said unto them,
This is the work of God,
that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Self righteousness doesn't save.
and we cannot take any of the glory
from Jesus, by thinking we are righteous,
except through His covering.

He stressed the justification through grace,
and that, through the blood of Christ,
and not the sacrificial 'deeds of goodness'
that many still perform, in order to insure their salvation. . no no,
this is not truth. . Jesus did it all for us, and it is finished. .
all of God's work was finished through the cross.

******************************************************************************************

Romans 9:18  Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
19  Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
20  Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
21  Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
22  What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
23  And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,

Here Paul is teaching us that God will have mercy on whom He pleases. . and in verse 22,
He could even create and suffer the  vessels of dishonor,  in order to show His glory in
the vessels of His creation of honor. . using the Pharaoh of Egypt as an example.

He stiffened his neck, in order to show His mighty divine power through Moses. .

So we need'nt question God's works, His ways are much higher than ours. . and we will
never understand all, till that glorious day of enlightment. . when we will know, and be known.
1 Corinth. . 13. . . .

**********************************************************

Romans 12:19  Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

Here is a verse to remember. . we need give no place to wrath. . if we trust our Lord, who is protective,
loving, and caring toward us, ,
He will take care of our enemies. . or wrong doers. .

*********************************************************************

And here is our instruction on patiotism. . . if you want to call it that. . and I do. .

Romans 13:1  ¶Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
2  Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
3  For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
4  For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
5  Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
6  For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
7  ¶Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

The use of the word 'wrath' is in verse 4 and 5

Paul is reminding us that all power is from God in heaven,
and all powers on earth are ordained of Him.
We do not want to resist the powers that be, here on earth. .
giving honor where it is due, and custom where it is due,
and fear and tribute where it is due, and so on. . .
prayers are always in order to help. .

**********************************************************************

There are many more verses on the subject of "wrath"  which is basically "anger"  wheather divine,
righteous, or malicious. .

This last one here mentioned should not be forgotten. .

Ephesians 4:26  Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

So we now know that we can be angry- - and sin not. . how is this ? ?

How have you felt when you heard the Son of God meligned? ?

How have you felt when you find out the devil has taken on destruction of a loved one?

There is certainly enough darkness in this world to make one angry at times. . but there is no
need to sin, in this anger. . . instead shine the light on it. . reveal the darkness for what it is. .

then let it go, don't hold on to it. . do what you can, and move on. .

This concludes this study of 'WRATH'

forward to parables, what do they tell us?
